10 Things That Make Me Smile Every Summer

By Dr. John H. Sklare of The Inner Diet

What immediately comes to mind when you think about summer?  For me, it’s always been a very welcome and magical season.  As a young boy, it meant goodbye to the mundane, weekly school schedule and hello to the freedom found in lazy summer days and later weekly bedtimes.  To this day, however, summer still remains my favorite season.   I absolutely love summertime and just the thought of its arrival lifts my spirit and brightens my day.  I must say that I am more than ready to put on my annual summer smile.  So today,  I’d like to share with you a few things that make me smile every summer.

Let me preface this by saying that it would do us all a lot of good to smile more regardless of what season it is.  The truth is that there is nothing on this earth that can improve your looks, brighten your mood or provide a wellness inoculation to your health faster than the power of a simple smile.  It’s one of those primal human expressions that is part of the world’s universal language.  No matter where on the planet you go a smile is clearly understood regardless of whether or not two people speak the same language.

As you also most likely know, smiling is a very contagious phenomenon as well.  If you don’t believe me, just try smiling at a few random people today and watch the responses that you get.  Sure, you may find a few people who think you’re a bit odd or ignore you all together but, if your smile is sincere, most will smile right back at you.  And, as I mentioned earlier, smiling is good for both your body and your mind for a variety of reasons!  Among other things, smiling can help to relieve stress, boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure and elevate your mood.  So, as I prepare to put on my seasonal summer grin, let me share with you a few simple things that make me smile every summer!  With that said what follows, in no particular order, are ten things about summer that always make me smile!

  1. The Smell Of A Newly Mowed Lawn

One of the true indicators for me that summer is upon us is the smell of freshly cut grass.  The sound of mowers running outside on a sunny afternoon and the lovely aroma of a newly mowed lawn always remind me that summer is here which, of course, always makes me smile.

  1. The Heat

I know everyone doesn’t appreciate this particular aspect of summer but I happen to love it!  As long as I can find air conditioning when I need it, the blistering heat and humidity of summer makes me feel truly alive and brings a smile to my face every year!

  1. Summer Rain

This sort of piggybacks on my previous entry…The Heat.  There are few things in the summer that are more relaxing, soothing and smile inducing to me than a cool rain shower after a hot sunny day.  The rhythmic and hypnotic sound of a gentle summer rain always brings a smile to my face.

  1. Outdoor Tennis

Being a strong advocate of exercise, I work out on the tennis court about 4 days a week.  The summer means that I can leave the protection and confinement of the indoor facility and workout on the courts in the great outdoors again.  I’m smiling right now just thinking about it!

  1. The Aroma Of Outdoor Grilling

There are few things that bring a smile to my face faster than having my olfactory suddenly being overwhelmed by that hypnotic, smoky aroma of people barbecuing.  It always stops me in my tracks as I deeply inhale and try to capture as much of that moment as my nose can hold.  Then I simply smile in pure mouthwatering delight!

  1. The Sun On My Face

On a beautiful sunny day, I can’t help but smile when I pause, close my eyes and momentarily point my face toward the sun.  There is just something magical about the warm and cozy feeling I get when the warmth of the sun engulfs my face.

  1. The Shade

I typically enjoy this particular smile inducing event during the breaks in my tennis workout.  After hitting balls for a period of time in the heat on a hot tennis court, there is nothing like sitting in the shade for a brief rest while enjoying an icy cold drink of water.  A definite smile producer!

  1. The Smell Of Sunscreen

It doesn’t matter where I am; the smell of sunscreen always brings a smile to my face.  It reminds me of my carefree days of youth, summer vacations and the beach!  That reminds me…don’t forget to put on your sunscreen this summer!

  1. Watermelon

I know it’s summer when the sweet taste of watermelon is in season.  Eating a delicious piece of watermelon on a hot summer’s day is pure heaven and definitely brings a smile to my face.

  1. Birds Singing

One of the things that always make me smile is the sound of the chirping birds early on a warm summer morning.  Each morning, when I go out to get my newspaper, I always pause for a moment and listen to the sweet and melodic songs of my feathered tree bound neighbors waking up.  Their singing always leaves me smiling!

So there you have it!  As I mentioned earlier, this list is by no means complete.  It does, however, give you a brief glimpse into what makes me smile during the summer season.  So how about you?  What about summer brings a smile to your face?  Regardless of what it is, I hope you have a spectacular summer this year and, regarding your smile, I have two suggestions.  Don’t leave home without it and show it off everywhere you go this summer.  Your smile will make the world a better place and, honestly, you look so much better when you wear it!
